PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Nov. 3, 2013) – In its final game of 2013, the Rutgers field hockey fell to Bucknell, 5-2, in Lewisburg, Pa., Sunday. Juniors Jenn Staab (Marmora, N.J.) and Sophie Wright (Devizes, United Kingdom) scored the goals for the Scarlet Knights.
RU finished the year 9-9 (2-5 BIG EAST), while Bucknell improved to 8-9. The .500 record for the Scarlet Knights is the best mark the program has had since the 2008 team went 14-6. Rutgers held a 6-4 advantage in penalty corners in the contest. In addition to Staab and Wright, senior Laura Rose (Washington Township, N.J.) and freshman Sofia Walia (Surrey, British Columbia) each recorded a shot.
The Bison scored the first two goals of the game in the first half, as Amie Pritchard and Kiersten Sydnor found the back of the cage.
The Scarlet Knights were able to cut Bucknell’s lead to 2-1 with the first goal of the second half at the 45:52 mark. After the ball bounced just inside the circle, Wright fired a backhand shot into the cage. The Devizes, United Kingdom, native finished the season as RU’s leading scorer with nine goals and 19 points.
Bucknell answered, as Estelle Palandjian and Leigh Hillman scored at 48:51 and 53:12, respectively.
Staab was able to cut the lead to 4-2, scoring her first goal of the season after she collected a blocked shot and then put it past goalkeeper Erica Perrine with 13:06 remaining in the second half.
With just 1:24 left on the clock, Bison Rachel Misko capitalized on a penalty shot to secure a 5-2 win for Bucknell.
