PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 12, 2013) – On its Senior Day, the Rutgers field hockey team topped Georgetown, 5-0, at the Bauer Track and Field Complex Saturday. Junior Sophie Wright (Devizes, United Kingdom) led the Scarlet Knights with two goals in the contest. The win marked Rutgers’ fifth in a row.
RU improved to 8-5 (2-2 BIG EAST). Georgetown fell to 2-11 and 0-4 in the conference. The Scarlet Knights’ defense held the Hoyas to zero shots in the game. It was the first time RU held an opponent to no shots since at least the 2009 season.
The Scarlet Knights had four different players score goals and five players posted at least one point.
In the first half, Wright scored her first goal at the 9:57 mark. Freshman Sofia Walia (Surrey, British Columbia) took a shot after penalty corner inbound pass and Wright deflected it into the back of the cage.
Later in the opening stanza, sophomore Nicole Imbriaco (Clark, N.J.) was awarded a penalty stroke in the circle, and capitalized to give Rutgers a 2-0 lead with 11:50 remaining in the half.
Senior Lisa Patrone (Washington Township, N.J.) opened up the scoring for the Scarlet Knights in the second half, notching her first goal of the season after making a couple of moves in the circle in the 41st minute.
With 16:14 remaining in the game, the Scarlet Knights were awarded a penalty corner. In a play that mirrored RU’s first score of the game, Wright deflected in another goal off of a shot from Walia after the penalty corner insert pass. The goal was Wright’s team-best eighth of the season.
At the 56:13 mark, senior Laura Rose (Washington Township, N.J.) recorded her fourth goal of the season on a penalty stroke, giving Rutgers the 5-0 lead, which it would not relinquish.
The Scarlet Knights are back in action on the road, taking on conference-foe Louisville on Oct. 19 (Noon), before facing Indiana on Oct. 20 (1 p.m.).
