PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Sept. 14, 2013) – The Rutgers field hockey team defeated Siena, 4-1, at the University of Albany on Saturday. Four different Scarlet Knights scored in the contest, while eight posted at least one point.
RU (3-2) posted 16 shots in the contest, holding the Saints (0-3) to just one. The Scarlet Knights also notched 16 penalty corners to just one for Siena.
On its only shot of the match, the Saints got on the board first 14:59 into the first half on a Theresa Tremblay goal. With 1:53 remaining in the opening stanza, senior Laura Rose (Washington Township, N.J.) scored her third goal of the season with assists from classmate Kaitlyn Plouse (Hummelstown, Pa.) and freshman Ashpal Kaur Bhogal (Leeds, England). The score was tied, 1-1, at the half.
Freshman Sofia Walia (Surrey, British Columbia) notched the first goal of her career on a penalty stroke 5:12 into the second half. With 19:01 remaining in the contest, sophomore Katie Champion (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) tallied her first goal of 2013 off a pass from senior Lisa Patrone (Washington Township, N.J.).
Just 42 seconds later, Rutgers sealed the win as freshman Rachel Yaney (Bridgewater, N.J.) put one in the back of the cage for the second time this season, receiving a pass in front of the net from junior Sophie Wright (Devizes, United Kingdom). Wright leads RU with nine points this season.
The Scarlet Knights are back in action tomorrow, Sept. 15, taking No. 13 Albany in Albany, N.Y., at 2 p.m.
