  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Sept. 1, 2013) – The Rutgers field hockey team earned a 5-2 victory against Vermont in Burlington, Vt., Sunday. The Scarlet Knights used four second-half goals to put the Catamounts away. Five different RU players scored, as freshman Ashpal Kaur Bhogal (Leeds, England) led the Scarlet Knights with a three point performance (1g, 1a).

Vermont (0-2) got on the board first just over three minutes into the game as Colleen Slaughter found the back of the cage. Rutgers (1-1) then went on a 3-0 run, starting with Bhogal, who tied the game at 1-1 with 6:37 remaining in the first half.

Just under two minutes into the second half, senior Laura Rose (Washington Township, N.J.) scored her first career goal on an assist from Bhogal. At the 44:21 mark, senior Danielle Freshnock (Middletown, N.J.) notched an unassisted goal to cap the run.

The Catamounts cut RU’s lead to one as Ashley McDonald scored with 9:14 remaining. The Scarlet Knights would answer, as freshman Sara Regn (Shamong, N.J.) tallied her first career score for Rutgers off a pass from senior Lisa Patrone (Washington Township, N.J.) just 1:32 later. With 3:45 on the clock, junior Sophie Wright (Devizes, United Kingdom) found the back of the cage for the second-straight game off a penalty corner pass from freshman Devon Freshnock (Middletown, N.J.) to seal the win.

Rutgers returns to action with its home opener on Friday, Sept. 6 at 3 p.m. against La Salle at the Bauer Track and Field Complex.
