Scarlet Knights add two to the fall squad

  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Aug. 12, 2013) – Rutgers field hockey added freshmen Ashpal Bhogal (Leeds, England) and Shevaun Hayes (Melbourne, Australia) to the 2013 roster, head coach Meredith Long announced Monday.  The Scarlet Knights head into the season with 20 members.

    Prior to Rutgers: First British-Asian female to represent England in field hockey at any international level … Competed for England’s U18 and U16 squads … Recognized by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom David Cameron, Mayor of London Borris Johnson and the London House of Commons for breaking barriers in England … Selected to carry the torch at the 2012 London Summer Olympics … Played club hockey for the Investec Women’s Hockey League in 2011 … Captained the Pennine Pumas U16 at the Future Cup Tournament in 2009 and was vice captain of Mercia Lynx U19 in 2011 … Bronze medalist at the London School Games in 2012 … Parents are Bobby and Tina Bhogal … Has four siblings: Mandip, Hari, Dillon and Davina … Three grandparents were hockey Olympians at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games … Father, Bobby, is an England Masters hockey player who represented his country at the 2000 European Indoor Hockey Championships in Prague … born Sept. 20, 1994.

    Coach Long on Bhogal: "I am thrilled to have a player of Ashpal's caliber join our program. Ash brings a high level of international playing experience and will have an immediate impact on our program. She is a talented and driven athlete who will play a key role in our backfield. Bhogal rounds out an incredibly talented incoming class."

    Prior to Rutgers: Won two Associated Public Schools of Victoria (APS) Premiership Championships (2011, 2012), finishing as runner-up in 2010 as a member of Carey Baptist Grammar School’s team … Member of three outdoor state championship winning squads, including the Under 18 Victoria Outdoor Squad, the U15 Victoria Outdoor Squad and the U14 Victoria Outdoor Squad … In 2010, was youngest (16 years old) goalkeeper playing in the highest hockey league in the state … Helped the 2012 Victoria U21 Indoor State Team and the 2010 Victoria U18 Indoor State Team to national championships … Vice captain of the 2011 U18 Victoria Indoor State Team that was runner-up on the national level …  Selected for Goalkeeping Development Program by the Victorian Institute of Sport … Also played softball, competing in numerous state championships, earning district MVP honors, serving as captain and receiving the Catherine Taylor Memorial Trophy (MVP) for her high school team … Parents are William and Christine Hayes … born on Feb. 25, 1994.

    Coach Long on Hayes: "Shevaun joined us in the spring of 2013 and has already proven what a strong goalkeeper she is. Her international experience will be a great asset going into the season."
