The Huskies got on the board early when Kelly Cochrane scored on a penalty stroke with four minutes remaining in the first half. It was the only goal of the first half, as the Rutgers defense, led by junior goalkeeper Stacey Gaenzle (Lancaster, PA) stopped seven of UConn’s 11 shots on goal.
In the second half, the Huskies came back fighting, registering four more goals, including two unassisted goals by Lauren Henderson in 1:30 minutes. UConn picked up its third BIG EAST victory with the 5-0 win.
RU’s Gaenzle, first in the BIG EAST for saves and ninth in the nation, made 12 saves on the day. In goal for the Huskies was Maureen Butler, who stopped Rutgers’ lone shot of the day made by sophomore Mary Szymonowicz (Piswcataway, NJ).
Rutgers returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 22, when the Scarlet Knights host Lafayette College for an 8 p.m. non-conference bout.
