Rutgers Field Hockey Announces Additions to 2013 Roster

  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 1, 2013) – Rutgers field hockey coach Meredith Long announces the addition of five players to the Scarlet Knights roster. Long is in her second year at the helm of the RU field hockey program and led the team to a 9-10 finish in the 2012 season, with a 2-4 mark in the BIG EAST. Sarah Regan (Shamong, N.J.), Elyse Broderick (Manahawkin, N.J.), Devon Freshnock (Middletown, N.J.), Rachel Yaney (Bridgewater, N.J.), and Sofia Walia (Surrey, BC) will join the Scarlet Knights for the 2013 season.

    “I could not be more thrilled about the class we have coming in this fall,” said coach Long. “Each of the girls brings a new dimension to the team, while keeping consistent with the playing style of Rutgers field hockey. The coaches and I are extremely excited for what the season will bring.”

    Captained the Seneca High School field hockey team and was named to the All-Conference squad during junior and senior campaigns … named Most Valuable Player senior year … played club hockey for South Jersey Edge and Spirit of USA … played in the Field Hockey Disney Showcase, 2012 Futures National Championship, and 2011-2012 National Club Championships … captained Seneca High School lacrosse team and was named all-conference her junior year … sprinted for the Seneca track team, competing in 200, 400, 4x4 and distance medley relay teams … Student Government Vice President for four years … active member of Renaissance Club, German Club, Community Service Club, and FCA.

    Four year member and three-year starter of Southern Regional High School’s Varsity field hockey team … captained the squad her junior and senior seasons … named the Ocean County Player of the Year in 2011 … named to the Ocean County First Team, All-Shore First Team, Coaches All-Division Class A-South Team, All-State Division 4 Second Team, and Atlantic City Press All Stars First Team in 2011 and 2012 … member of Futures … played club hockey for the Spirit Eagles Field Hockey Club … was a member of the U19 squad who took first place at the 2012 Disney Showcase, 2012 National Indoor Tournament and Festival Showcase … born on July 16, 1994 … daughter of Ed and Lenore Broderick … has two older brothers, Eddie and Brian

    Four-year member of the Middletown High School North Varsity field hockey team ... voted team MVP for her efforts during her sophomore, junior and senior campaigns … switched between defense and midfield and finished her career with 40 goals and 20 assists … helped the Lions capture a Shore Conference A North Division Title … two-time All County First Team, Second Team All Shore, and All-A North ... played seven years of club hockey for Jersey Intensity … helped Jersey Intensity secure four USA Field Hockey Disney Showcase medals, four USA National Field Hockey Festival medals, and three USA National Indoor Tournament medals … active member of the USA Field Hockey Futures Elite Program … holds the Middletown North 400, 300, and 55 meter dash school records … active member of both the National and Spanish Honors Society … will join her sister Danielle on the Rutgers roster.

    Four-year member and senior captain of the Bridgewater Raritan High School Varsity field hockey team … helped lead Bridgewater Raritan to four-straight conference championships, Group 4 sectional and county championships, North Jersey Championships, and finished each year as the runner-up in the Group 4 State Championships … named 2012 High School All-American Third Team and NFHCA All Region Team- Mid Atlantic by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association … named to 2012 All-Skyland Conference First Team and All-State First Team by New Jersey Star Ledger and Courier News … Star Ledger Player of the Year- Somerset County … selected to the North Jersey Field Hockey Coaches Association Group 4 First Team and 2012 Group 4 All Star Team … finished her career with 80 goals … scored 37 goals senior year and set a school single-season record with 31 assists … played club field hockey for Spirit Eagles … member of 2012 gold medal team at Disney Showcase … member of 2012 National Indoor Champion squad … 2011 Gold Medal National Field Hockey Festival … Futures Elite choice in 2012 and 2013 … member of 2011 US National Indoor Team 2011.

    Invited to train with the Canadian National Program at the age of 12 after participating in U16 National Championships … member of U17, U21 and Senior National teams … won Athlete of the Year accolades on numerous occasions … also played soccer and basketball for her high school … born in Medicine Hat, Alberta on December 31, 1995 … Lives in Surrey, BC … Daughter of Harbhajan and Atit … has a younger brother, Harkirat.
