The loss was overshadowed by RU head coach Ann Petracco coaching her 500th game, a milestone reached by only five other field hockey head coaches, three of which achieved it this season. In her 26th season as the head coach of the Scarlet Knights, Petracco is 245-215-40.
RU goalkeeper Stacey Gaenzle (Lancaster, PA) held the Bears scoreless through the first half, but UC’s Pooja Mehta scored 50 seconds into the second half to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Mehta again scored for Cal, doubling the lead, while Nora Feddersen scored the final goal for the Bears. The Scarlet Knights were unable to find an open scoring option and ended the game scoreless. Gaenzle made nine saves, facing 17 shots on goal. Rutgers made seven shots on goal, led by junior forward Jennifer Noon (Shavertown, PA) with two. Bears’ goalie Kelly Knapp made two saves.
Rutgers concludes its California trip with a match against Stanford on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 5 p.m. EDT.
