  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers field hockey team (2-12, 0-3 BIG EAST) tied the match with seven minutes remaining, but was edged by Saint Joseph’s, 3-2, tonight on the Rutgers Stadium turf field.

The Hawks began the scoring with a goal 4:29 into the match when Kathy Sokalski crossed the ball to Katelyn O’Brien. Saint Joseph’s increased its lead to 2-0 when Natasha Pronga fired the ball past RU goalkeeper Stacey Gaenzle (Lancaster, PA).

Rutgers returned from halftime and answered Saint Joseph’s goals with two of its own. Junior Leann Grondski (Mercerville, NJ) put the Scarlet Knights on the board after Kamilah Lalani’s (West Vancouver, BC) penalty corner shot ricocheted off the goalkeeping pads of SJU’s Courtney Huff. Less than two minutes later, Lalani tied the score with a direct penalty corner shot. Junior Ashley Recker (Dillsburg, PA) made the insert, while classmate Megan Cech (Moorestown, NJ) made the stop. The Scarlet defense was able to hold the Hawks’ offense scoreless for over 30 minutes, thanks in part to a defensive save by sophomore Tiffany Klebez (Milford, PA), but the Hawks scored the final goal of the evening when Kristin Teklinsy dished the ball to Kelly Bulter, giving the Hawks the 3-2 win.

Gaenzle had nine saves in goal for Rutgers, while Huff made six saves for Saint Joseph’s. The defensive save by Klebez gives her six on the season, tying her with teammate Julie Speckels (Los Altos, CA) for the team lead and sixth place on the RU single-season chart.

The Scarlet Knights return to conference action on Saturday, Oct. 19, when they head to BIG EAST rival, Connecticut. Push-off is set for 2 p.m.
