PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 20, 2012) –Rutgers field hockey returns home to the Bauer Track & Field Complex to host No. 2 Syracuse and Cornell this weekend. RU (4-4) and BIG EAST foe SU (7-0) will face off on Friday, Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. The Scarlet Knights meet the Big Red (1-4) on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m.
RU dropped its conference opener to Connecticut, a 5-0 loss last Saturday. The Scarlet Knights answered with a 5-0 victory over Sacred Heart. In the match against Sacred Heart, Rutgers freshman Katie Champion (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) tallied her first goal and first points of the season. Alyssa Bull (Oakville, ON, Canada), Carlie Rouh (Berlin, N.J.), Danielle Freshnock (Middletown, N.J.), and Cornelia Duffin (Moorestown, N.J.) each added a goal for RU.
The match against Syracuse marks the second game of BIG EAST play for the Scarlet Knights. The Orange are currently undefeated, tallying three shutouts on the season. Sophomore forward Lauren Brooks (Lancaster, PA) currently leads the Orange with six goals, including two game winners. Brooks is tied with Kelsey Millman (Center Valley, PA) with 13 points to lead the team.
Syracuse holds a 19-6 all-time record against Rutgers. The teams last met on Sept. 16, 2011, when RU fell by a score of 5-1.
Cornell enters the weekend coming off their first win of the season, a 4-0 shutout against Ivy opponent UPenn. Junior Hannah Balleza tallied the first hat trick of her career, with three-consecutive goals in the first half.
The Scarlet Knights last faced the Big Red on Oct. 23, 2011, which resulted in a 2-0 victory for RU.
