  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 16, 2012) –  The Rutgers field hockey team recorded their second shutout of the season on Sunday, Sept. 16 in New Haven, Conn., blanking Sacred Heart, 5-0.

The Scarlet Knights (4-4) came off a tough loss the day before to a solid No. 5 Connecticut squad, but rallied against Sacred Heart (4-2) to take home a win and finish the weekend’s play, 1-1.

Alyssa Bull (Oakville, Ontario) kicked off the shutout for the Scarlet Knights, scoring off a pass from Danielle Freshnock (Middletown, N.J.) at the 8:24 minute mark. Bull’s goal was her second of the season, and the assist was Freshnock’s third.

Five minutes after the Bull goal, RU senior Carlie Rouh (Berlin, N.J.) drove the ball up the field to eventually slot one past the Sacred Heart goalkeeper, Mary Altepeter, putting the Scarlet Knights up 2-0. Rutgers freshman Katie Champion (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) tallied her first goal and first points of the season as she blasted a shot to the cage watching the ball hit the crossbar and fall behind the line, good to put RU up 3-0.

The second half saw similar action, with Cornelia Duffin (Moorestown, N.J.) putting the first points of the half on the board, followed by Freshnock who found a sharp cross from Bull to knock in and seal the game for the Scarlet Knights, 5-0.  Duffin’s goal was her fourth of the season, bumping her to the top of the RU squad in points with eight.

The Rutgers defense proved impenetrable as they allowed just six shots from the Pioneers offensive attempts.  Rutgers recorded 23 shots on the day and seven penalty corners to Sacred Heart’s two corner attempts.

The Scarlet Knights return home to Bauer Track and Field Complex for a four-game stretch, kicking things off with conference foe Syracuse on Friday, Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. RU then faces Cornell on Sunday, Sept. 23 for a 1 p.m. matchup.
