Cornelia Duffin scored her third goal of the season

ORONO, Maine (September 7, 2012) – Rutgers field hockey (2-3) suffered its first road loss of the season, falling to Maine (2-4) 2-1 on Friday, Sept. 7 at Maine FH Complex.

The Scarlet Knights dominated in the first half, controlling possession and outshooting the Black Bears 5-1, while holding a 4-2 edge in corners. The strong offensive effort led to Rutgers pulling ahead 1-0 on a goal at the 12:20 mark from senior Cornelia Duffin (Moorestown, N.J.), her third of the season. The scoring opportunity came off a corner as junior Danielle Freshnock (Middletown, N.J.) assisted on the opening tally.

The first half saw Rutgers owning the shot category with a 5-1 advantage, but the game saw a momentum shift in the second half with Maine outshooting RU 8-3.

Maine’s Zoe Adkins sent a shot to the right side of the cage at the 47:47 minute mark off a rebound from Nicole Sevey.  The game stayed tied at one apiece until the last minute of play when Annabelle Hamilton capitalized on a penalty stroke opportunity with less than a minute in the game. The Scarlet Knights couldn’t come back from the last-minute goal and ended the game 2-1.

Despite the loss, the teams fought a close game as Rutgers had eight shots to Maine’s nine, and had four penalty corners to Maine’s six.

Sarah Stuby (Roxbury, N.J.) had five saves on the day, making that 29 for the season so far.

Tomorrow RU faces Bryant at Maine’s field in Orono for another nonconference matchup at noon. Next weekend, the Scarlet Knights kick off conference action on Saturday, Sept. 15, facing a solid Connecticut team that made a 2011 NCAA Tournament appearance, finishing fifth in the nation.  In a quick turnaround, Rutgers travels to New Haven, Conn., for next-day play against Sacred Heart at 2 p.m.
