Rutgers got on the board early when Leann Grondski (Mercerville, NJ) scored on a penalty stroke five minutes into the match. Rutgers held the 1-0 lead through most of the first half until Kristen Hulmes scored on a cross from Gina Chico. The Hawks took a 2-1 lead when Chico dished the ball to Kellie Nurko with three seconds remaining in the first half.
With 15 minutes remaining in the match, Monmouth extended its lead to 3-1 when Megan Kenney scored during a penalty corner. Katie Levy and Deana DeGregorio earned assists on the goal. Rutgers mounted a comeback as junior forward Colleen Maniere (Princeton Jct., NJ) scored after a penalty corner shot was blocked and Jennifer Noon (Shavertown, PA) directed the ball to Maniere. Unfortunately, the comeback fell shot as the match ended 3-2 in favor of the Hawks.
RU’s junior goalkeeper Stacey Gaenzle (Lancaster, PA), ranked seventh in the nation for saves, made six saves on the day, while Carrie Colbert made four for the Hawks. Rutgers’ Julie Speckels (Los Altos, CA) made her fourth defensive save of the season, moving her into a tie for third on Rutgers career defensive saves list with 10.
Rutgers returns to BIG EAST Conference play when the Scarlet Knights head to Providence on Saturday, Oct. 12, for a 1 p.m. match. The Knights return home on Wednesday, Oct. 16, when they will host Saint Joseph’s in an 8 p.m. non-conference match.
