Cross Country Unveils 2014 Schedule

PISCATAWAY, N.J.  (July 11, 2014) – The Rutgers men’s and women's cross country team unveiled their 2014 schedule on Friday, as the Scarlet Knights enter their first season in the Big Ten. The men's slate features five races in the local New Jersey and New York area, while the women's schedule features four races in the local New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania area. 

The men's cross country team opens the season returning to the Fordham Fiasco & Follies at Van Cortland Park on Saturday, Sept. 6 and returns to action two weeks later at the Monmouth Invitational at Holmdel Park on Saturday, Sept. 20.  Last season, RU finished third at the Monmouth Invite, including a tenth place finish by rising senior Chris DeFabio (Millington, N.J.).

October opens with Rutgers taking part in the Metropolitan Championships at Van Cortland Park on Friday, Oct. 10 and continues at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday, October 18. At last year’s Met Championships, the Scarlet Knights improved two spots in the standings, ending the meet in fourth place on the 8K course.

The RU men will run in their first Big Ten Cross Country Championship in Iowa City, Iowa on Sunday, Nov. 2. NCAA Regional racing takes place on Saturday, Nov. 14 at Penn State while the IC4A’s at Van Cortlandt Park and NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana will be held on Saturday, Nov. 22.

The Scarlet Knight women's cross country squad also opens the season returning to the Fordham Fiasco & Follies at Van Cortland Park on Saturday, Sept. 6 and is back in action two weeks later at the Monmouth Invitational at Holmdel Park on Saturday, Sept. 20, an event which Rutgers has captured the last two seasons.  Last year, RU finished in fourth at the Fordham Fiasco led by rising junior Paige Senatore (Delsea, N.J.) and rising senior Allison Payenski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.), who both finished in the top 10. Senatore is also the reigning Monmouth Invitational champion, taking home the top spot on the 5K course by a 21-second margin.

October opens with Rutgers taking part in the Paul Short Cross Country Invitational hosted by Leigh, followed by the Metropolitan Championships at Van Cortland Park on Friday, Oct. 10. At last year’s Met Championships, the Scarlet Knights placed third paced by a pair of top ten times on the 6K course by Senatore and Payenski.

The RU women will run in their first Big Ten Cross Country Championship in Iowa City, Iowa on Sunday, Nov. 2. NCAA Regional racing takes place on Saturday, Nov. 14 at Penn State and NCAA Championships take place on Saturday, Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
