PISCATAWAY, N.J. (June 11, 2013) – The Rutgers men’s and women’s cross country programs were recognized by the NCAA on Tuesday for their academic success in the release of the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores.
RU’s women’s cross country earned an APR score 1,000 for the second straight year and have earned the perfect score in seven of the last nine years spanning the 2003-04 and 2011-12 academic years. The Scarlet Knight’s men’s cross country boasted an APR score of 1,000 for the 2011-12 academic and have earned the perfect mark in eight of the nine years spanning the 2003-04 and 2011-12 academic years.
“The coaching staff is very proud of our student-athletes’ academic performance,” said women’s cross country coach James Robinson. “We emphasize a total commitment to academic and athletic excellence. The team did a tremendous job in the classroom and we couldn’t be any more proud of them.”
“Cross country and track are unique in that they go from September all the way to June,” said men’s cross country coach Mike Mulqueen, whose men’s indoor and outdoor squads also earned scores of 1,000 for the 2011-12 academic year, “so it’s a great testament to our athletes putting the ‘student’ in student-athlete all year round. It’s a great reflection of our academic advising staff, including Monique Brown. Rutgers’ whole philosophy of great academics and great athletes is really at the forefront. Our teams really want to be the best they can be and take advantage of getting a Rutgers degree.”
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
Rutgers men’s cross country has received All-Academic honors by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the seven straight years, while the women’s team has earned similar accolades the last five seasons.
