HOLMDEL , N.J. (September 15, 2012) – With four top-10 finishers, the Rutgers women’s cross country team captured the Monmouth Invitational Saturday afternoon in Holmdel Park. RU scored 36 points in the opening scoring meet, 21 points less than runner-up and host, Monmouth.
“We were very pleased to see our team compete well today. It’s always good to win a team title early in the season in order for our student-athletes to build confidence,” said head coach James Robinson. “They put in a lot of work during the summer months in preparation for this season and it’s nice to see early season results.”
Sophomore Ashley Deckert (Newfield, N.J.) led the way for the Scarlet Knights, finishing second in the 57-runner field with a time of 18:31.7.
Also placing in the top-10 were junior Jenifer Spitzer (Fairport, N.Y.), who finished sixth with a time of 18:54.6, freshman Allison Payenski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.), who finished eighth with a time 19:19.8, and sophomore Briana Demming (Webster, N.Y.), who completed the course in 19:20.9 to place ninth.
