Appearance is an important part of the selection process and will be considered at all times during the tryouts. Candidates should be “game ready” at all times throughout the tryout weekend. It is important to remember that you are trying out for an extremely high profile position representing Rutgers University.
Women - Game makeup and hair styled as if you were at a game. Wear a fitted sports tank or sports bra, cheer shorts, white socks, and cheer sneakers.
Men - Clean shaven. Collared golf shirt, gym shorts, white socks, and sneakers.
Important: No jewelry or visible tattoos! It is recommended for all candidates to wear Rutgers University logos or colors to tryouts. Do not wear other university, all star, or high school logos to the Rutgers Cheerleading tryouts.
There is no set skill requirement for the Rutgers Cheerleading Tryouts as you will be compared based on the talent of candidates at the tryout selection. All skills must be performed without a spotter, but please only show skills that you know you can hit.

This is required for all tryout candidates. The sideline should be performed in a collegiate, game leading manner. Standing tumbling during the spirit portion of the sideline is highly recommended. Excessive facials is discouraged. Candidates should be prepared to use poms (including using poms with standing tumbling) and megaphones during this portion.
Stunting will be performed much like a practice setting. Be prepared to be switched around in groups and to be asked to try more than one stunt position. We will be evaluating strength, stunt technique, and potential for learning new skills. We will place you in stunt groups and ask you to create your own stunt sequence that include the following stunts:
All Girl Stunting
1. Heel stretch with single or double full down
2. Full up variations (full up platform, full up pull through, low to high full around, high to high full around)
3. Tick tock variations (switch up, low to high tick tock, high to high tick tock; may be to any body positions)
4. All girl bases that can perform toss chair or toss hands
Non-returning Coed Couples:
1. toss or walk-in hands
2. press extension
3. press liberty
4. transitional stunt sequence of your choice
Returning Coed Couples:
1. toss extension
2. toss liberty
3. transitional stunt sequence of your choice

CommitmentSummer schedules will be handed out at the first mandatory team meeting. All practices are mandatory so please plan ahead!
UCA College Cheer Camp and Pre-Camp is mandatory for the entire cheerleading program. Camp is August 8 - 11 in Scranton, PA. Pre-camp dates TBA.
Practice times during the 2013 - 2014 school year:
All Girl: Monday and Wednesday from 8:00 pm - 10:30 pm; Sunday from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Coed: Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm; Sunday from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Do not schedule classes that conflict with the start of practice time. Professors schedule tests during practice times and games. Please plan ahead and work out alternate test times with your professors.
You are required to be present at all games that your team is supporting; which includes, but is not limited to home football games, away football games, home men and women’s basketball games, and basketball tournaments.
Nationals Competition Commitment:
Rutgers Cheerleading attends UCA’s College Cheerleading Nationals held each year in January in Orlando, FL. Nationals is not a priority, rather a privilege and a goal. All members of the Rutgers cheerleading program will be considered for a spot on a nationals team. If you are selected to compete, plan on practice over Winter Break.
Rutgers Cheerleaders are required to purchase the following items:
bodysuits, briefs, white socks, game bows
Besides your personal expenses, team members will be required to seek $600 in contributions to cover camp, practice gear, choreography, nationals expenses, etc. All money should be turned into the program by the first June practice. We make every attempt to keep costs down. Please do not let these expenses weigh in your decision to tryout for the Rutgers Cheerleading program. We understand that individuals may not be able to afford all expenses and make every attempt to help you with your contribution.
Still have questions? Please contact Sean Timmons at firstname.lastname@example.org for the RU All Girl Squad or Jamie Pontarollo at email@example.com for the RU Coed Squad.
If you are not selected for either of the teams during the selection process, please wait a minimum of one week prior to emailing the Rutgers cheerleading coaches if you would like feedback on how to improve for future tryouts. We are only allowed to speak with tryout candidates and team members, so do not have your parents contact the coaching staff or the University. Keep in mind that Rutgers Cheerleading sometimes has team openings that come up during the summer months and you may be contacted for another tryout.
