Our Cagers Club

It all began when the Lady Knights were playing in the 1978-1979 playoffs. A group of loyal RU football fans went to see the women play in a double header with the men’s basketball team. It was love at first sight!
These loyal fans, Ethelyn and Leo Meyer, Kay and Larry Pitt, Libby and Bob Hull, Bill Merrill along with Head Coach Teresa Grentz, Athletic Director Fred Grunninger and Assistant Athletic Director Rita Kay Thomas were our original founders of the club.
When two buses filled with fans went to a playoff game, everyone was recruited to become a Cagers Club member. After an interview with the Home News, Coach Grentz asked for members, and the rest is history. Our club has grown to nearly 300 members.
Charley Cassady, our first club president wrote:
“ What is a Cager?”
“ A Cager is a rooter who has taken the women’s basketball team to heart. The coaches, players and everyone connected with the team as well as the members become part of your family.”
The love affair still continues after 27 years!
As we begin the next 27 years…our #1 Goal is to Pack the RAC and get as many fans to away games as possible. Bob Manfre, Our Transportation Chair and his committee will be providing many opportunities for us to support our “TEAM” on the road.
So… as our Coach, C.Vivian Stringer begins her 13th year “on the banks” and the club is looking forward to continuing the tradition started by our club’s founders of unwavering loyal support of the Women’s Basketball Team, coaches, staff and RU.
JOIN US!!! Become a part of the excitement and fun; bring your families and friends. Share in the pride of a hard working group of women who have given so much over the years and been so incredibly successful. They deserve our support.
The officers of the club look forward to seeing you at the Cagers Club Table before and after each home game.
