But cosmetic changes, albeit visible, were just the first step. Construction began in the fall of 1998 to modernize the Louis Brown Athletic Center, which has been a centerpiece of campus life for students and fans alike since 1977. The RAC renovations considerably enhance the total experience of student-athletes who don the scarlet and white in competition.

One of the most important additions provided by the renovation is a brand-new student learning center, which will house 28 computer stations, with state-of-the-art features. The new learning center provides RU STRONG, the ever-growing “Life Skills” program, with a permanent home to assist student-athletes with career development and personal growth programs.
Another key component in the upgrade is an expansive, strength and conditioning center, a striking facility which more than doubles the size of the previous weight room. The new center, sprawling 3520 square feet, offers the Knights an opportunity to train for top athletic performance using the most advanced equipment in a fresh, modern environment.![]() |

Rutgers athletes also have access to a large training room conveniently located adjacent to the main arena floor. This addition more than doubles the area of the athletic training facilities, including the addition of a large permanent whirlpool. More accessible to all student-athletes, the newly-designed athletic training room has all of the latest modalities and equipment necessary to help prevent injuries and evaluate and rehabilitate with the best care available.
The journalists and media who cover Rutgers athletics also benefit from the RAC remodeling, as the modifications include a new, larger media work area and a separate interview area, allowing for an even more professional and comfortable work setting. Other important improvements in the RAC renovation feature expanded and modernized offices.
These many significant changes allow the Rutgers Division of Intercollegiate Athletics to stand proudly, shoulder to shoulder with the best athletic programs in the nation. It’s still the RAC, only better.
