PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s basketball has been ranked No. 14 in the Women’s College Basketball News Service 2003-04 Preseason College Top 25 Poll, the organization announced today. It is the fourth preseason ranking that the Scarlet Knights have received. RU were picked 14th by Slam Magazine and 19th by Athlon Sports. Earlier this offseason, Womenscollegehoops.com picked Rutgers 18th in its Very Early Bird Top 50 Poll.
In addition, junior guard Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) was selected to the Second Team Preseason All-America Team. Pondexter led Rutgers with 18.3 points and 4.9 assists per game during her rookie campaign, adding 5.1 rebounds per contest to rank second for the Scarlet Knights. An honorable-mention Associated Press and Kodak/WBCA All-American as well as the 2003 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, she also was the first rookie in conference history to earn a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team. Pondexter has already been named a candidate for the Wade Trophy and Wooden Women’s Award.
The Scarlet Knights engineered the most dramatic turnaround in Division I last season, improving from 9-20 in 2001-2002 to 21-8 and a trip to the 2003 NCAA Tournament’s second round.
Rutgers opens its 2003-04 season on Friday, Nov. 14, at the Louis Brown Athletic Center in the first round in the Preseason WNIT against St. Peter’s.
