PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s basketball team has been included in several preseason polls for the upcoming 2003-2004 season.
The Scarlet Knights were picked 14th by Slam Magazine and 19th by Athlon Sports. Earlier this offseason, Womenscollegehoops.com picked Rutgers 18th in its Very Early Bird Top 50 Poll.
The Scarlet Knights engineered the most dramatic turnaround in Division I last season, improving from 9-20 in 2001-2002 to 21-8 and a trip to the 2003 NCAA Tournament’s second round.
In addition to the team acknowledgements, junior Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) has already been named a Wade Trophy and Wooden Women’s Award candidate this fall. The 5-9 guard averaged 18.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game last year, earning All-America honors from the Associated Press, Kodak/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), and Womenscollegehoops.com. The 2003 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, she was the first rookie in league history to earn first-team all-conference honors.
