  • ATHENS, GA – In a game which featured big scoring runs from both teams, fourth-seeded Rutgers (21-7) scored 11 of the game’s final 13 points to defeat 13th-seeded Western Kentucky (22-9) 64-52 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament March 22 in Athens, GA.

The No. 23/24 Scarlet Knights began the game with a 9-0 spurt, then scored nine more unanswered points midway through the first half to build a 31-23 halftime lead. The Lady Toppers responded with a 15-3 run to begin the second half, taking their first lead of the game at the 12:51 mark (36-34), then extending that lead to four (38-34, 11:27). The Western Kentucky lead seemed to snap the Knights out of their second-half fog, as sophomore Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) hit back-to-back three-pointers on consecutive possessions, then classmate Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) got a transition basket and the foul for a three-point play, putting the Knights on top 45-38 with less than eight minutes to play. WKU later pulled to within one (48-47, 5:30), but Rutgers always seemed to have an answer down the stretch, making five of six (.833) free throws in the game’s final five minutes while adding in two buckets from Pondexter and a Mauri Horton (Minneapolis, MN) jumper from the elbow.

Pondexter collected her second career double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, adding five assists and a season-best six steals. Newton was the other Knight in double-digits in scoring with 14 points. Junior Shalicia Hurns (Indianapolis, IN) contributed her fifth double-figure rebounding effort with her game-high 12 caroms.

In addition, RU head coach C. Vivian Stringer became the fifth person in women’s basketball history to coach in 900 career games, and with one more victory (674-226) she will be the fourth women’s head coach to win 675 career games.

RU will play the winner fifth-seed Georgia in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Stegeman Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:14pm. ESPN2 will broadcast the second-round game, and WCTC 1450 AM and WRSU 88.7 FM also will broadcast the game live.
