  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – A controversial call in the game’s final 10 seconds was the difference as second-seeded Rutgers (20-7) lost to seventh-seeded Miami (18-11) 77-74 in the BIG EAST Tournament’s quarterfinals March 9 at RU’s Louis Brown Athletic Center.

RU trailed by 12 (43-31) at halftime, and were on the short end of a 70-63 score with 3:25 to play in the game. The Knights mounted a furious rally, capped by senior Mauri Horton’s (Minneapolis, MN) three-pointer with 10 seconds to play, evening the score at 74-74.

RU tipped the inbounds pass, and sophomore Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) went to the floor and gained control of the loose ball as Miami’s Melissa Knight came down on top of her. The referee blew her whistle and signaled a Rutgers timeout, but the RU players immediately protested that no timeout was requested due to RU’s lack of timeouts. Miami was awarded two free throws for the technical, both of which they made with eight seconds on the clock to pull ahead 76-74, and the Hurricanes inbounded the ball at halfcourt. Horton fouled Miami’s Yalonda McCormick, and she made the front end of a two-shot foul with five seconds remaining in the game. Horton rebounded the miss, and Pondexter’s 35-foot shot hit the top of the backboard as time expired.

Pondexter, who was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year prior to the tourney, established a new Rutgers BIG EAST Tournament record with her 30 points, completing 12 of 19 (.632) shots while collecting six rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Junior Shalicia Hurns (Indianapolis, IN) contributed 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for her third double-double, while sophomore Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) added 12 tallies.

Rutgers now will await the announcement of the 64-team NCAA Tournament field, which will be released Sunday, March 16, at 5:00 p.m. on ESPN.

    POSTGAME NOTES

-- Rutgers sophomore and BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Cappie Pondexter had her second 30-point scoring effort of the season with her 30 points tonight. She scored her season best of 31 at Georgetown on Feb. 22. She is the first Scarlet Knight to have more than one 30-plus outing in a season since Alicia Sheeler (1994-95) did it twice in the 1994-95 season (30 on Jan. 14, 42 on Feb. 1).

-- Junior Shalicia Hurns had her third double-double of the season this evening with 13 points and a season-best 12 rebounds. Her 12 caroms mark the eighth time she has led the team in rebounding, a team high.

-- The Scarlet Knights forced the Hurricanes to commit 28 turnovers, the second-highest opponent total of the season. RU forced Providence to turn the ball over 31 times on Jan. 28, 2003. The 12 turnovers committed by Miami’s Yalonda McCormick ties the BIG EAST Championship record for most individual turnovers in a game, set by Denise Barbour of Georgetown on Feb. 27, 1986, against Seton Hall.
