Rutgers outscored Boston College 20-13 through the first 10 minutes of the second half to knot the score at 53-53 on a Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) three-pointer midway through the second period. The two schools traded baskets throughout the rest of the half, with neither school leading by more than four points.
With RU down by two points (68-66) with less than a minute remaining, senior Mauri Horton (Minneapolis, MN) missed a three-point shot that would have given the Scarlet Knights the lead. Horton, the team’s lone senior, tallied a game-high 18 points on Senior Night.
Following Horton’s failed three-point attempt, Rutgers was forced to foul and BC’s Becky Goldstein connected on two free throws to bring the Eagles’ lead to four with 21 seconds remaining. The see-saw battle continued with the teams trading baskets as RU sophomore Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) and Boston College’s Amber Jacobs each scoring, keeping the Boston College up four points, 72-68, with eight seconds left on the clock.
Pondexter, who scored 17 points in the game, including nine in the final three minutes, hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to record the final 72-71 margin.
Freshman Rebecca Richman (Bronx, NY) registered career highs in points (eight) and rebounds (nine), while junior Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) added 11 points and five rebounds for the Scarlet Knights in the loss.
Boston College opened the game hitting its first seven shots on its way to a 40-33 edge at the break. For the game, the Eagles hit 26 of 39 (.667) field goals.
The Scarlet Knights will be back in action at the 2003 BIG EAST Championship, held at the Louis Brown Athletic Center starting this weekend. RU will play on Sunday at 6 p.m. in the quarterfinal round against the winner of Miami and Syracuse first-round game
