  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Junior Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) scored 23 points, one shy of her career high, to help No. 20/23 Rutgers (19-5, 12-2 BIG EAST) hand Virginia Tech (17-8, 8-6 BIG EAST) its worst loss of the season, 67-43, in BIG EAST women’s basketball action tonight at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

The Scarlet Knights outscored the Hokies, 33-19, in the second half to cruise to their 10th-straight win.

McCullouch was one of four Scarlet Knights to score in double figures to lead the balanced Rutgers offensive attack. Sophomore Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) added 11 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) tallied 10 points and five assists for RU, while junior Shalicia Hurns (Indianapolis, IN) chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench.

McCullouch, who scored 12 of her 23 tallies in the first half, helped Rutgers surge out to a 10-point lead at the break, 34-24. RU’s aggressive defense didn’t let up in the second half as the Scarlet Knights forced 11 second-half turnovers, sparking a 14-3 run to give Rutgers a 25-point lead (62-37), its largest of the game.

With the win, RU avenged its only loss in the past 14 games, a 66-64 overtime defeat at Virginia Tech on Jan. 22. The victory also keeps RU a perfect 11-0 at home this season as the Scarlet Knights held on to second place in the BIG EAST.

Rutgers will be back in action at No. 18 Villanova on Saturday, March 1, at 2 p.m.
