MISSION STATEMENT
Sophomore Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) became the seventh rookie in RU history to break the 30-point barrier, scoring 31 on 12-for-19 (.632) shooting, adding seven rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Senior Mauri Horton (Minneapolis, MN) came off the bench to collect 19 points, nine rebounds and three assists, while sophomore Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) had her first double-double of the season, and second of her career, with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) added 13 tallies and seven caroms in the victory.
Rutgers began the game with a 15-1 run, and the Knights owned a 36-20 halftime lead. RU started the second half by scoring 17 of the first 22 points and never looked back in earning the 41-point victory, the program’s most lopsided win since defeating Saint Joseph’s by 42 (80-38) on Dec. 21, 2000. The 93 points scored by the Scarlet Knight offense were the most for RU since Feb. 10, 2001, when Rutgers defeated Providence 97-68.
The last time a Knight first-year player scored 30 or more was Dec. 27, 1997, when Tasha Pointer scored 33 against UCLA. In addition, Pondexter’s 31 points tied for the 29th-best overall outing in school history and tied for the third-best total by a RU rookie.
Rutgers will attempt to earn its 10th consecutive victory Wednesday, Feb. 26,
when the Knights host Virginia Tech. Tipoff at the Louis Brown Athletic Center
