  • JAMAICA, NY – C. Vivian Stringer earned her 150th victory as the head coach of the Scarlet Knights as No. 22/23 Rutgers (17-5, 10-2 BIG EAST) defeated St. John’s (8-16, 2-11 BIG EAST) 69-38 Feb. 19. Sophomore Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) provided the spark as RU posted its largest margin of victory in a BIG EAST game this season, collecting team highs of 21 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, all while committing just one turnover. The BIG EAST Co-Rookie of the Week, Pondexter today was named one of 12 finalists for the Nancy Lieberman-Cline Award, an honor given to the nation’s best point guard.

Sophomore Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) notched 14 points, five assists and three steals, while freshman Courtney Locke (San Marcos, TX) scored a season-high 10 points.

RU dressed just eight players due to injuries, but all eight contributed. In addition to Locke’s 10 points and three assists, freshman Aquisha Cahoe (Philadelphia, PA) contributed four tallies and three rebounds and sophomore Amber Petillon (Brick, NJ) had four points, three rebounds and a blocked shot as the three combined to play 59 minutes off the bench.

Leading 29-19 at halftime, Rutgers blew the game open in the second half, holding the Red Storm to just 5-for-24 (.208) shooting, outrebounding St. John’s 20-8 and outscoring the Storm 18-2 in the paint in the final 20 minutes. In addition, the 38 points were the fewest allowed by Rutgers this season.

Stringer, in her eighth season “On the Banks” and in her 31st season overall as a head coach, now owns a 150-89 (.628) record as Rutgers’ mentor and a 670-224 (.749) mark overall.

Rutgers will finish the week at Georgetown Saturday, Feb. 22, at 2:00 p.m
