MISSION STATEMENT
The Pirates led 21-20 at halftime and scored five of the first seven points of the second half to take a 26-22 lead. Rutgers then scored the next nine points to pull ahead 31-28, then went on a 13-7 run to push the advantage to 44-35 with 4:50 on the clock. In what has become a trend as of late, the Knights were excellent at the free-throw line in the closing minutes, making 12 of 15 (.800) attempts down the stretch.
With the victory, RU stayed in second place, leading Boston College (7-3), Villanova (7-3) and Virginia Tech (7-3) by a half-game.
Sophomore Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) scored 18 of her 20 points in the second half, adding a team-high 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Junior Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) added 13 points and three steals, while sophomore Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) had 10 tallies. Classmate Mariota Theodoris (Riviera Beach, FL) had her second consecutive solid performance off the bench, scoring 10 points and adding five rebounds and two blocked shots to tie her career highs in points and blocks.
Neither team was sparkling from the floor, as RU shot 37.5 (18-48) percent from the field and Seton Hall made 28.8 (15-52) percent. However, in the second half, the Knights made 11 of 26 (.400) attempts, while the Pirates converted just six of 25 (.240).
Rutgers begins a two-game homestand Wednesday, Feb. 12, against West Virginia. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
