MISSION STATEMENT
Pondexter made eight of 12 (.667) field goals in the first 20 minutes, leading RU to a 33-31 halftime lead. The Lady Monarchs took the lead just 1:05 into the second half, and the two teams battled back and forth until ODU pulled ahead 48-47 with 6:08 to play. Senior Mauri Horton (Minneapolis, MN) responded with a three-pointer at the 5:38 to mark to give the Scarlet Knights a 50-48 advantage, and Rutgers did not trail again, making 12 of 12 free throws in the final 1:45 to seal the victory.
Horton, junior Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) and sophomore Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) each had 10 points for the Knights in the victory. Junior Shalicia Hurns (Indianapolis, IN) added six tallies and a team-best seven rebounds in the winning effort.
The win concluded a month of January which found the Knights play six of nine games on the road and a total of four games against ranked teams. RU’s victory at Old Dominion gave the Knights a 6-3 (.667) record since the first of the month.
With her three-pointer, Horton moved into a tie for fourth place on the RU career charts with 100 made (Liz Hanson, 100, 1992-96).
The Scarlet Knights will return home to take on BIG EAST opponent Miami Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m.
