MISSION STATEMENT
Senior Mauri Horton (Minneapolis, MN) drilled a three-pointer to tie the score at 64-64 with 17 seconds to play in overtime, but was then whistled for a foul 30 feet away from the VT basket as Rutgers attempted to trap Chrystal Starling. Starling then stepped to the line and made both free throws to win the game for the Hokies.
Horton led the Scarlet Knights with 23 points and three steals. Sophomore Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) added 14 points and a team-best seven assists, while sophomore Cappie Pondexter had 11 tallies.
After leading 28-23 at halftime, the Knights fell behind the Hokies 52-44 with 3:59 to play. RU put together an 11-2 run during the final four minutes of regulation, capped by a Pondexter layup with 43 seconds remaining. Horton scored the first basket of overtime, but Virginia Tech went up by three points three different times in the final 2:04
The road loss came just two days after Rutgers had received its first national ranking in almost two years, appearing 23rd in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 Poll. RU’s five losses this season have all come on the road, with three of the defeats coming at the hands of top-10 teams. Rutgers’ losses this season have come by an average of 5.6 points, with three of them coming by four or fewer points.
