Rutgers sealed the victory with a strong second half, outscoring the Orangewomen
41-25 after leading at halftime, 34-30. The Scarlet Knights held Syracuse scoreless
for the first 3:49 of the second half to take a 40-32 lead. Syracuse would not
get closer than five points (42-37) the rest of the way.
Sophomore point guard Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) had 20 points to lead the
Scarlet Knights, marking the third consecutive game she has recorded at least
20 points in a game. She shot 8-of-14 (.571) from the field and 3-of-5 (.600)
from three-point range and had a team-high five assists, while adding five rebounds
and three steals. Sophomore forward Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) recorded 14
points on 7-of-10 (.700) shooting, while freshman Michelle Campbell (Princeton,
NJ) came off the bench to score 13 points in 19 minutes. Senior guard Mauri
Horton (Minneapolis, MN) also had a double-digit point total with 10. She also
led the team with nine rebounds and five steals.
The Scarlet Knights will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 15, with a home game against No. 22 Villanova. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
POSTGAME NOTES
Hurns at Home –
Junior Shalicia Hurns made her Louis Brown Athletic Center debut this afternoon.
Today, Hurns contributed seven points and five rebounds, shooting 3-of-6 (.500)
from the floor and 1-for-3 (.333) from the line.
Locke It Up –
Freshman Courtney Locke saw major minutes this afternoon. In 18 minutes in the
first half, Locke came off the bench and dished out two assists. During the
second half, she returned to the floor, making three assists in five minutes.
Her five assists surpasses her previous season best of three at Harvard (12/21)
and her 23 minutes of play also pass her season high of 19 against the Crimson.
Cappie Leads the Way –
Sophomore Cappie Pondexter led the team in scoring for the seventh time this
season, including the previous two games, scoring 29 points at Texas Tech (1/2)
and 23 at UConn (1/8). Her 20 points today marked her fourth 20-plus scoring
game of the season (22 vs. Wagner), her third consecutive.
Campbell from the Line –
Freshman Michelle Campbell set new season highs at the line, hitting seven of
her 10 free throws. Prior to this afternoon’s game, her .818 (18-22) free-throw
percentage was a team best. On the season, Campbell is now 25 of 32 (.781) from
the line.
With a total of 13 points this afternoon, Campbell earned her fourth double-digit
outing of the season, one point shy of surpassing her personal best of 14 against
Northwestern (12/1).
Double-Digit Wins –
The 75-55 victory over Syracuse marks the sixth of Rutgers’ seven wins
this season by double-digits. The 20-point margin is the largest since Dec.
21, when RU defeated Harvard by 39 points, 79-40. It also is the third time
this season Rutgers has beaten an opponent by 20 or more points.

Rutgers maintains its winning streak, moving to 6-0 when playing before 5 p.m.
The Scarlet Knights also are a perfect 5-0 when playing in the RAC, averaging
