MISSION STATEMENT
Rutgers (6-4, 0-1 BIG EAST) took its first lead on a Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) jumper, making the score 15-14 with 9:58 remaining in the first half. After two lead changes left the score 22-20 in favor of the Knights, the Huskies (13-0, 1-0 BIG EAST) responded with a 13-2 during the final 5:15 of the half, entering the locker room with their largest lead of the first half (33-24).
Connecticut’s second-half advantage grew to as many as 16 points (49-33, 11:12), but Rutgers chipped away at that lead during the next 10 minutes, pulling to within five (61-56) thanks to a pair of Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) free throws with 1:03 to play.
A pair of free throws by Jessica Moore pushed UConn’s lead back to seven, but RU sophomore Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) nailed a three-pointer to make the score 63-59 with 27 seconds remaining. UConn made four of its next six free throws, putting the game out of reach despite Pondexter’s three-pointer in the final five seconds.
Pondexter had her second-consecutive 20-point game with a team-high 23 points,
adding four rebounds, three assists and two steals. McCullouch scored 14 and
Newton added 10, while each collected seven rebounds to tie for the team lead.
Senior Mauri Horton (Minneapolis, MN) rounded out RU’s double-digit scorers
with 11 tallies.
