MISSION STATEMENT
Pondexter made 13 of 26 (.500) field goals and three of four (.750) free throws for her 29 tallies, adding two steals. She was just one point shy of being the first RU player to score 30 points since Dec. 27, 1997, when Tasha Pointer had 33 at UCLA in the Pac 10/BIG EAST Challenge.
Junior Shalicia Hurns (Indianapolis, IN) had a double-double in her first RU game, tallying 10 points and a team-best 11 rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench. The 6-3 forward was competing in her first game after joining the Scarlet Knights as a mid-year transfer from Purdue last January. Sophomore Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) added 11 points and four rebounds, while junior Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) had totals of 10 tallies and six caroms.
Trailing 48-35 at halftime, Rutgers rallied to within seven (71-64) with 7:11 to play in the game. The Lady Raiders responded with a 13-6 run, taking a commanding 84-70 lead with 3:40 on the clock. From there, the closest the Scarlet Knights could get was 87-78 with less than 90 seconds remaining in the game.
The loss came despite a 22-7 RU advantage in points scored off turnovers. The
difference for the Scarlet Knights came in transition and on the free-throw
line, as Texas Tech outscored RU 15-2 on fast breaks and was 29-for-42 (.690)
from the charity stripe compared to Rutgers’ 14-of-20 (.700) effort.
