  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Triggered by a 23-0 run in the first half, the Rutgers women’s basketball team (5-2) defeated Harvard (6-4) today at the Louis Brown Athletic Center, 79-40. The Scarlet Knights held Harvard to just seven first-half points, which set a record for the fewest points scored in a single half in Rutgers history.

With the score at 6-3 in favor of RU, Mauri Horton (Minneapolis, MN) hit a three-point field goal with 16:09 left in the first half to begin the 23-point run for RU. Over the next 11:23, Harvard went 0-for-15 from the field, committed 10 turnovers and had no second chance points. Harvard scored its first field goal of the game by Kate Ides at the 17:48 mark of the first half, but the Crimson did not score again until hitting two free throws with 6:26 left in the half. By that time RU had built a 29-5 lead. Harvard did not hit another field goal until 15:06 later, which made the score 40-7. Rutgers entered the locker room with a 44-7 lead.

Sophomore point guard Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) finished the game with a career-high nine assists, while Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) tallied a season-high 23 points on 11-of-18 (.611) shooting. McCullouch set a career high with 11 made field goals, breaking her previous best of 10, accomplished last season against Northwestern State. Horton added 15 points on 6-of-9 (.667) shooting and season-high 10 rebounds. The double-double was the first for a Rutgers player this season. Aquisha Cahoe (Philadelphia, PA) contributed a career-high 10 points in eight minutes of action.

Rutgers shot 34-of-68 (.500) from the floor in the game and held Harvard to 13-of-48 (.271) shooting, including a 2-for-21 effort (.095) in the first half. The Scarlet Knights forced 22 turnovers and came up with 15 steals, led by Chelsea Newton’s (Monroe, LA) four, which tied a career high. Horton, Pondexter and McCullouch all posted three steals apiece in the contest.

The Scarlet Knights will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 29, at home against No. 21/22 George Washington. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m
