  • PHILADELPHIA, PA – The No. 9/10 Rutgers women’s basketball team (28-6, 14-2 BIG EAST) advanced to its fifth Elite Eight with a 64-58 victory against No. 8/7 Ohio State (30-5, 14-2 Big Ten) in the Philadelphia Regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament March 27.

Rutgers will play No. 3/3 Tennessee in the Philadelphia Regional final Tuesday, March 29, at Temple’s Liacouras Center. The tipoff time will be announced at the conclusion of the regional semifinal games. The RU/UT game will be shown on ESPN. For tickets, log on to ticketmaster.com.

The third-seeded Scarlet Knights trailed 18-10 10:10 into the contest, but Rutgers answered with a 10-1 run in the next 4:04, capped by back-to-back buckets from senior Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA), giving RU a 20-19 lead with 5:46 on the clock. A left-side layup, three-pointer from the left corner and jump shot gave the Scarlet Knights a 27-22 advantage at the break.

Rutgers held Ohio State, the nation’s leader in field-goal percentage (.510), to an 8-for-24 (.333) effort in the first half, outscoring the Buckeyes 12-4 off turnovers and 5-0 in second-chance points. Ohio State, which ranked fifth nationally in three-point field-goal percentage (.393), made just one of six (.167) attempts in the first 20 minutes, scoring 22 points. That total was the third-worst of the season for OSU – the previous low came Jan. 16 in Columbus against RU (16). Four times the Buckeyes trailed at halftime this season, and two of those instances came against the Scarlet Knights.

Ohio State three times cut the Rutgers lead to two points in the second half, including a 47-45 margin with 5:59 on the clock, but Rutgers responded with a 7-0 spurt of its own in the next 2:50, thanks to five straight points from junior Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ), followed by an eight-foot bank shot and a three-pointer from senior Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL).

The Scarlet Knights made eight of 11 (.727) free throws in the game’s final 1:19 to put the game out of reach.

Pondexter, the tournament’s second-leading scorer through the first two rounds (23.5 ppg) pumped in a game-high 24 tallies, adding four assists and five rebounds. Freshman Matee Ajavon (Newark, NJ) had 14 points, and Newton added 13 tallies and a team-best eight rebounds. Campbell, senior Rebecca Richman (Bronx, NY) and redshirt junior Mariota Theodoris (Riviera Beach, FL) helped hold first-team All-American Jessica Davenport to six field goals, as Davenport scored 10 of her 22 points from the charity stripe.

Rutgers outscored the much-taller Buckeyes 22-9 off turnovers, 26-24 in the paint and 20-7 in second-chance points. Ohio State shot 39.6 (19-48) percent from the field and 23.5 (4-17) percent from three-point range. Rutgers turned the ball over a season-low seven times.

The 58 points were the fourth-fewest by OSU this season, meaning that two of the Buckeyes’ four lowest totals came against Rutgers. RU avenged a 52-50 loss at Ohio State Jan. 16, marking the second straight NCAA Tournament game that the Scarlet Knights earned a victory against an opponent that had handed them a regular-season loss.

Rutgers advances to the Elite Eight for the fifth time (1986, 1987, 1999, 2000, 2005). RU’s only regional-final victory came in 2000 in Portland, OR, when the second-seeded Scarlet Knights defeated No. 1 Georgia 59-51 to advance to the Final Four in Philadelphia.

The Scarlet Knights and Lady Volunteers met Dec. 29 in Piscataway, and No. 24 Rutgers earned a 65-51 victory against No. 8/8 Tennessee. That win would start an eight-day run that included a 51-47 victory at No. 4/3 Texas (Jan.
    2) and a 51-49 overtime triumph against No. 1/1 LSU (Jan. 5).
