MISSION STATEMENT
Pondexter made six of 12 (.500) field goals and four of five (.800) free throws while collecting nine caroms to tie with RU teammate Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) for game-high rebounding honors. Pondexter added four assists, while Newton led the Scarlet Knights with three steals. Junior Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) added 10 points and seven rebounds while playing all 40 minutes for RU.
Trailing 9-5 in the opening moments of the game, RU scored five unanswered points to pull ahead 11-9, never relinquishing that lead for the remainder of the game. Ahead 25-20 with less than four minutes to play in the first half, Rutgers scored the final seven tallies, entering the locker room with a 32-30 lead. Key to the Knights’ halftime advantage was its 24-12 rebounding lead in the first half, a statistic punctuated by RU’s 10-0 advantage in second-chance points during the first 20 minutes.
Rutgers’ lead grew to as many as 18 (50-32, 3:57) in the second half, aided by 10 points from Pondexter and 8-of-11 (.727) free-throw shooting following the intermission.
RU’s defense held the Owls to 15-of-55 (.273) shooting from the field and a 2-of-13 (.154) effort from three-point range.
The Scarlet Knights will take a break for final exams, next competing on Saturday, Dec. 21, against Harvard. Tipoff at the Louis Brown Athletic Center (8,000) is at 2:00 p.m.
