  • HARTFORD, CT – The No. 9/9 Rutgers women’s basketball team (25-6, 14-2 BIG EAST) had its 10-game winning streak snapped with a 67-51 loss to No. 13/11 Connecticut (23-7, 13-3 BIG EAST) in the BIG EAST Tournament championship game March 8 at the Hartford Civic Center.

The Huskies jumped ahead 26-5 in the game’s first 10:42, but RU put together an 11-1 run to get back within 11 points (27-16) with 6:00 minutes remaining in the half. A Courtney Locke (San Marcos, TX) three-pointer in the final two seconds cut the Connecticut lead to 37-25 at the intermission.

That advantage fluctuated between 10 and 12 points for the first 12 minutes as the second half, as the Scarlet Knights twice cut the lead to nine points, including a 50-41 score with 8:33 on the clock. But, that was as close as RU would get, as Connecticut scored its final nine points from the free-throw line during the game’s last 3:44.

Freshman Matee Ajavon (Newark, NJ) scored 20 points to lead the Scarlet Knights, followed closely by senior Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) with 19 tallies. Pondexter also added three assists and four steals. Redshirt junior Mariota Theodoris (Riviera Beach, FL) came off the bench to contribute a game-high nine rebounds in 24 minutes of action. Ajavon and Pondexter were selected to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.

This marked Rutgers’ fourth trip to the BIG EAST Tournament final (1998, 2000, 2004, 2005), and third title-game match-up against the Huskies (1998, 2000, 2005). The Scarlet Knights won their first-ever outright BIG EAST regular-season title this season, earning their first top seed for the tournament. Connecticut, which tied for second place with its 13-3 regular-season record, was the third seed in this year’s tourney.

Rutgers will now await the announcement of the 64-team field for the NCAA Tournament Sunday, March 13, at 5:00 p.m. on ESPN. The Scarlet Knights invite all of their fans to join them for the viewing of the Selection Show at the Busch Campus Student Center. The event, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 4:00 p.m.
