  • HARTFORD, CT – Senior Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) scored a season-high 21 points to lead the No. 9/9 Rutgers women’s basketball team (24-5) to a 69-45 victory against eighth-seeded St. John’s (19-10) in the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals March 6 in Hartford, CT.

BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Matee Ajavon (Newark, NJ) hit consecutive threes to stake top-seeded RU to the early 6-0 lead, and the Scarlet Knights went on a 15-3 run midway through the first half to jump out to a 21-8 (12:21) advantage. Rutgers, a 35-21 leader at the break, was led by Ajavon’s 10 first-half points, as the Scarlet Knights made 14 of 27 (.519) shots in the first 20 minutes.

Rutgers started the second half with an 8-2 spurt, as Newton scored the Scarlet Knights’ first five points of the period, followed by a three-point play from junior Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ). That lead grew to as many as 31 (69-38, 3:56) during the second half as Rutgers put together a 21-5 run to seal the victory.

Newton made eight of 12 (.750) field goals for her season-high 21 tallies, adding a game-best five assists. Ajavon chipped in 14 points and four assists, while freshman Essence Carson (Paterson, NJ) contributed seven points and teams highs of nine rebounds and three steals. RU scored 20 points off of 23 St. John’s turnovers, made nine of 10 (.900) free throws compared to the Red Storm’s 6-for-12 (.500) effort from the charity stripe, and sank 27 of 57 (.474) attempts from the field compared to St. John’s 37.5 (18-48) field-goal percentage.
