  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers women’s basketball head coach C. Vivian Stringer has been named one of the 20 finalists for the 2005 Naismith National Coach-of-the-Year Award.

Stringer (718-244), who earned her 700th career victory Dec. 8 and moved into third place on the all-time Division I women’s victories list Jan. 26, has led Rutgers to a 23-5 overall record, a 14-2 mark in BIG EAST Conference play and the Scarlet Knights’ first-ever outright BIG EAST regular-season title this season. RU earned the top seed for the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time in the Scarlet Knights’ 10 years of membership in the league.

This marks the fourth time that Stringer has been named a Naismith finalist during her time “On the Banks” (2000, 2001, 2003, 2005). She was named the Naismith National Coach of the Year in 1993 after leading Iowa to the NCAA Tournament Final Four. Stringer joined fellow BIG EAST coaches Geno Auriemma (Connecticut), Cathy Inglese (Boston College) and Muffet McGraw (Notre Dame) on the list of finalists.

No. 9/9 Rutgers has received a first-round bye for this season’s BIG EAST Tournament. The Scarlet Knights will begin play in the quarterfinal round Sunday, March 6, at 2:00 p.m., facing the winner of the St. John’s/Seton Hall first-round contest. The quarterfinal game will be shown on CSTV and will be carried live on WCTC 1450 AM and WRSU 88.7 FM. A live stream of the radio broadcast will be available on www.scarletknights.com.
