  • VILLANOVA, PA – The No. 9/9 Rutgers women’s basketball team (23-5, 14-2 BIG EAST) won its first-ever outright BIG EAST Conference regular-season title with a 51-39 victory at Villanova (17-10, 10-6 BIG EAST) March 1.

The Scarlet Knights jumped out to a 13-3 lead (14:01) as junior Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) scored seven points during the opening spurt. Freshman Matee Ajavon (Newark, NJ) scored RU’s final seven points of the half, but Villanova ended the period with a 7-2 run, cutting Rutgers’ advantage to just two (27-25) at halftime.

Rutgers again came out of the gate quickly, scoring the first six points of the second half (33-25, 15:13), but the Wildcats once more had an answer, scoring six unanswered points to pull back within two (33-31, 12:51). The Scarlet Knights tightened up their defense at that point, forcing the national leader in fewest turnovers (9.8 pg) into eight miscues in the game’s final 10:41 while outscoring the Wildcats 18-8 down the stretch.

Rutgers ripped off eight straight points to build a double-digit lead (41-31, 7:03) thanks to two buckets by senior Rebecca Richman (Bronx, NY) and three straight field goals from Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL). Richman’s third field goal put the Scarlet Knights ahead 47-36 at the 1:02 mark, which was followed by a Villanova three-pointer. The Wildcats fouled Pondexter with 33 seconds to play in order to get the ball back, but the RU All-American made both free throws to push the lead back to double digits (49-39). Richman’s short jumper at the buzzer finished the scoring for the Scarlet Knights.

Ajavon scored 12 of her game-high 14 points in the first half, while Campbell had 11 of her 13 tallies before halftime. Freshman Essence Carson (Paterson, NJ) pulled down a game-best 10 rebounds, and Richman contributed eight points on 4-for-4 (1.000) shooting and six rebounds in her 12 second-half minutes off the bench.

RU held Villanova, a team that made four of 10 (.400) attempts from beyond the arc in the first half, to 1-for-9 (.111) shooting from three-point range after the intermission. The Scarlet Knights also owned a 40-24 advantage on the boards, limiting the Wildcats to just four offensive rebounds.

RU (14-2 BIG EAST) finished the regular season ahead of Connecticut (13-3 BIG EAST) and Notre Dame (13-3) to win its first-ever outright title, and with it, earn its first-ever top seed for the BIG EAST Tournament. The Scarlet Knights shared the 1998-99 regular-season trophy with Connecticut (17-1), and RU won the 1997-98 BIG EAST 7 Division title with a 14-4 mark.

Rutgers will receive a first-round bye in the BIG EAST Tournament at the Hartford Civic Center, and will begin play in the quarterfinal round Sunday, March 6, at 2:00 p.m. The Scarlet Knights will face the winner of the March 5 first-round game that will pit No. 8 St. John’s against No. 9 Seton Hall. RU’s game will be shown on CSTV and will be carried on WCTC 1450 AM and WRSU 88.7 FM. A live stream of the radio broadcast will be available on www.scarletknights.com.
