  • The Buckeyes led by as many as five in the first half (15-10, 6:57), but two Ajavon buckets and a Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) layup put the Scarlet Knights ahead by one (16-15, 4:16). An Ohio State free throw again tied the score, but Rutgers ended the half with a 5-0 run, and went into the locker room with a 21-16 edge.

Coming out of the intermission, a basket by Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) gave RU its biggest lead of the game at seven (23-16, 19:28), but the Buckeyes responded with a 9-2 run, forcing a 25-25 tie with 14:27 on the clock. The two teams traded runs and leads several times in the next 12 minutes, with the eighth tie of the game coming at the 2:35 mark (45-45). Ohio State converted a layup, and following a Rutgers shot-clock violation, Caity Matter nailed a three-pointer (50-45, 1:17). A free throw with 53 seconds remaining gave Ohio State a six-point cushion (51-45), but Rutgers’ Essence Carson (Paterson, NJ) made a three-pointer on RU’s next possession to keep the Scarlet Knights’ hopes alive (51-48, 0:31.8). Following a Rutgers foul and the missed front end of a one-and-one by OSU, Rutgers still had a chance to tie the game, but Ajavon’s three-point attempt was just short in the game’s final 15 seconds. Another made free throw gave the Buckeyes a four-point edge (52-48), and an 18-footer by Carson with 4.2 seconds remaining again made it a one-possession game (52-50), but Ohio State was able to inbound the ball and safely run the remaining time off the clock.

After shooting a season-low 26.1 (6-23) percent from the floor in the first half, the Buckeyes made 13 of 17 (.765) shots in the second stanza. RU outrebounded Ohio State 28-26, but the turnover numbers were nearly identical (15-14), usually a sizeable advantage for the Scarlet Knights. One of the key differences in the game came at the charity stripe -- Rutgers made just three of nine free throws (.429) compared to Ohio State’s 11-for-16 (.688) effort.

Ajavon added five steals to her team-high 20 points. Newton pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and contributed seven tallies.

Rutgers will return home to face Providence Thursday, Jan. 20. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Louis Brown Athletic Center. The game will be shown on a tape-delayed basis on Patriot Media and will be carried live on WCTC 1450 AM, WMTR 1250 AM and WRSU 88.7 FM. A live stream of the radio broadcast, as well as live statistics, will be available via www. scarletknights.com.
