  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s basketball team (3-1) defeated Northwestern (1-3) 62-50 in the championship game of the Rutgers Coca-Cola Classic at the Louis Brown Athletic Center in Piscataway, NJ, today. The consolation game was won by Richmond, which mounted a comeback to defeat Wagner 73-64.

Northwestern opened the scoring and led by as many as six points in the opening minutes of the championship game. The Scarlet Knights would not stay down long as Rutgers took its first lead of the afternoon, 17-16, at the 10:46 mark with a three-point shot from senior Mauri Horton (Minneapolis, MN). Rutgers carried that lead through the rest of the half, owning a 31-22 advantage at halftime.

The Wildcats came out in the second half fighting, closing the RU lead to three (32-29) four minutes into the period. The Scarlet Knights never relinquished the lead, though, sealing the victory in the final two minutes with a 9-1 run.

Five Scarlet Knights scored in double-digits, with freshman Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) leading the way with 14 points. Horton and sophomore Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) followed with 10 each. Newton led the team with six rebounds, while Mariota Theodoris (Riviera Beach, FL) added four steals.

In the consolation game, Richmond (3-1) came from behind to take the 73-64 victory against Wagner (0-3), finishing third in the Rutgers Coca-Cola Classic.

The Seahawks went on an 11-0 run in the opening minutes, leading Richmond 11-2 at the 14:33 mark. Richmond fought back, tying the score at 16-16 with 6:25 remaining in the half, but a three-point field goal by Wagner’s Joy Gallagher gave the Seahawks a 32-29 lead at the half. Toni Roker scored 15 of Wagner’s 32 first-half points.

The Spiders took their first lead since the game’s opening basket when Cammy Desmond scored to pull Richmond ahead, 48-47, with 9:35 to play in the game. Richmond led by eight points (57-49) with less than six minutes to play, but Wagner mounted a comeback. Two free throws and a bucket by Ashley Linscott brought Wagner back within one (63-62), but Richmond used a 10-2 run to end the game.

Wagner was led in scoring by Roker, who finished the afternoon with 23 points, while Linscott finished with 12 points and four steals. Ronnie Carter led the Seahawks with 10 rebounds. The Spiders saw Kate Flavin and Ebony Tanner pick up double-doubles. Flavin led the team with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Tanner scored 12 points and pulled down 10 boards. Also in double-digits for the Spiders were Amber Goppert with 14 points and Cammy Desmond with 10.

Kate Flavin (Richmond), Melissa Culver (Northwestern), Sara Kwasinski (Northwestern), Mauri Horton (Rutgers) and Chelsea Newton (Rutgers) were named to the All-Classic Team. The Classic MVP honor went to Cappie Pondexter of Rutgers.

    POSTGAME NOTES

    Seeing Double:
Five Scarlet Knights scored in double figures this afternoon in the 62-50 victory against Northwestern. The last time five Scarlet Knights scored in double figures was on Jan. 13, 2000, against Boston College.
    Today’s double-digit scorers:
    Michelle Campbell 14
    Mauri Horton 12
    Chelsea Newton 12
    Cappie Pondexter 10
    Dawn McCullouch 10

    On A Roll:
Both Chelsea Newton and Mauri Horton have scored in double figures every game this season. Horton also has scored in double-digits in the last five games, dating back to last season’s BIG EAST Tournament game against Boston College on March 3, 2002. Horton has scored 10 or more points in nine of the last 10 games for the Scarlet Knights.

    Hold Them Down:
Today’s 50 points allowed by the Scarlet Knights marks the third consecutive game that Rutgers has held an opponent to 50 or fewer points.

    Rookie Leader:
Freshman Michelle Campbell led the Scarlet Knights in scoring this afternoon with 14 points on 4-of-6 (.667) shooting from the field and a 6-of-8 (.750) effort from the line. Her performance today is the first time a freshman has led the team in scoring since Chelsea Newton led the team with 14 points against Miami on Jan. 5, 2002.

    Not Turning Over:
Rutgers turned the ball over 10 times today, a new season low. The 10 Scarlet Knight turnovers is the lowest total since Feb. 27, 2001, at Georgetown, where Rutgers turned the ball over only eight times.
