  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The freshmen duo of Essence Carson (Paterson, NJ) and Matee Ajavon (Newark, NJ) combined for 34 points as No. 24 Rutgers registered a convincing 65-51 victory over No. 8/8 Tennessee before 7,405 fans on Wednesday at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

For the Scarlet Knights (7-2), the victory is the 21st over a ranked opponent in the tenure of head coach C. Vivian Stringer. It’s also Stringer’s second-ever win over UT’s Pat Summitt and her first “On the Banks”. The 51 points scored by Tennessee tied for the second-lowest total in school history, behind a 46-point showing against Louisiana Tech on March 26, 1982.

Aside from Ajavon (20 points) and Carson (14 points, 13 rebounds), Rutgers received offensive contributions from Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) with 13 points and five rebounds and Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) with 10 points. Rutgers shot 39.3 percent from the floor (24-61) while holding the Lady Vols to just 27.8 percent shooting (15-54).

Rutgers held Tennessee (8-3) to a season-low 16 first-half points, as a stifling Scarlet Knight defense limited the Lady Vols to just four field goals in the first 20 minutes. After falling behind 6-2, RU scored 31 of the games next 41 points, keyed in large part by Ajavon, who came off the bench to score 12 points. Tennessee failed to score for a span of 6:45 in the first half, and was held without a field goal for the final 7:59 of the opening stanza.

The Lady Vols made a brief run in the beginning of the second half to close to within 13 points (36-23), but Rutgers was never seriously threatened and led by as many as 23 points on three different occasions.

Tennessee had just two players score in double figures – Shyra Ely (13 points, eight rebounds) and Nikki Anosike (12 points, nine rebounds). The Lady Vols turned the ball over 17 times, leading to 17 Rutgers points, and made only one-of-nine attempts from three-point range.

Rutgers All-America guard Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) made her 2004-05 season debut, playing 15 minutes while scoring her only point from the foul line.

The Scarlet Knights return to action on Sunday, Jan. 2, when they travel to Austin, TX, to face No. 4/3 Texas. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.

    Postgame Notes

    DE-FENSE
A stifling Rutgers defense held Tennessee scoreless over a span of 6:45 in the first half (16:50-10:05). During that time, the Scarlet Knights outscored the Lady Vols 11-2.
Aditionally, Rutgers held the Lady Vols to a season-low 16 first-half points. Tennessee made just four field goals in the first half, and went the final 7:59 of the opening stanza without a field goal. The 51 points by Tennessee is tied for the second-lowest offensive output in school history.
The lowest first-half point total in Tennessee history was 14 (3/25/1996 vs. Virginia) and the 16 points today is tied for the second lowest. UT also faced a 17-point halftime deficit, the third-largest in school history.

    PONDEXTER MAKES SEASON DEBUT
At the 10:56 mark of the first half, senior All-America guard Cappie Pondexter made her 2004-05 season debut. She played 15 minutes, scoring her only point from the foul line.

    DOMINANT AT HOME
Rutgers continued its home dominance this season. Through the first four games at the RAC, the Scarlet Knights are winning by an average of 24.7 points. The RU defense is holding opponents to just 47.5 points in the friendly confines of the RAC.

    AHEAD AT THE HALF
Rutgers is a perfect 7-0 this season when it leads at the half.

    CLEANING THE GLASS
Freshman guard Essence Carson made her fourth consecutive start and responded with her first career double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds.

STRINGER EARNS SECOND WIN OVER SUMMITT
Rutgers head coach C. Vivian Stringer notched her second win over Tennessee’s Pat Summitt. Her only other win over Summitt’s Lady Vols was as the head coach at Iowa. The win snapped a personal five-game losing streak against Summitt.

    FILLING THE SEATS
A season-high crowd of 7,405 watched today’s victory over Tennessee. It is the sixth-highest total in the history of the Louis Brown Athletic Center, eclipsing the total of 7,223 that saw RU take on Connecticut (2/23/02). Last year, 7,734 filled the seats when Rutgers hosted Connecticut (2/14/04).

    AGAINST RANKED TEAMS
While today’s was RU’s third-ever win over Tennessee, it was head coach C. Vivian Stringer’s 21st win over a ranked opponent in her tenure “On the Banks.”
