  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The No. 22 Rutgers women’s basketball team (6-2) forced 24 Clemson turnovers and pulled away late in the second half for a hard-fought 66-51 victory over the Lady Tigers (5-5) on Saturday afternoon at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

    Senior guard Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) led three Rutgers players in double figures with 17 points and five rebounds. Redshirt senior Nikki Jett (Columbia, SC) had 15 points, while junior forward Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) added 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Jett matched her career high with seven assists.

    Ahead by just five points (43-38) with 9:30 to play, Rutgers went on an 11-4 run to take a 52-42 lead with just over four minutes remaining in regulation. The Scarlet Knights put the game out of reach by making eight of their 10 free-throw attempts in the final minute of play.

    An active Rutgers defense held Clemson to just 36.2 percent shooting (17-47) and RU converted the Tigers’ 24 turnovers into 26 points. Through eight games, RU’s defense is forcing an average of 20.2 turnovers per game.

    Rutgers took a 27-21 lead into halftime by holding the Lady Tigers to just 34.8 percent shooting (8-23) in the first half while forcing 11 turnovers. Courtney Locke (San Marcos, TX) came off the bench to provide RU with a much-needed offensive punch, pouring in eight points on three-of-five shooting in the first half.

    With the win, Rutgers is now 3-0 at home this year and has won 18 of its last 20 games at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights are winning by an average margin of 28 points per game on their home floor.

    Reggie Maddox led Clemson with a game-high 18 points.

    Rutgers will be off until Wednesday, Dec. 29, when it welcomes No. 9/10 Tennessee to the RAC. Tip-off is slated for 5:00 p.m., and the game can be seen live on College Sports Television (CSTV

    POSTGAME NOTES

    A NEW STARTING FIVE
    The Scarlet Knights used their fourth different starting lineup this season, as Michelle Campbell, Essence Carson, Nikki Jett, Matee Ajavon and Chelsea Newton made up RU’s four-guard attack. Collectively, they combined for 55 of Rutgers’ 66 points.

    JETT CONTINUES ALL-AROUND PLAY
    Redshirt senior Nikki Jett contributed 15 points in today’s victory and tied her career high with seven assists. Jett has scored in double figures in four of Rutgers’ last five games and is averaging 12.8 points per game over that span.

    DE-FENSE
    Rutgers’ defensive pressure forced 24 Clemson turnovers today, and the Scarlet Knights scored 26 points off of those miscues. For the season, Rutgers is forcing an average of 20.2 turnovers per game, the third-highest total in the BIG EAST.

    LOCKE FOR THREE
    Over the past three games, Courtney Locke has provided Rutgers with a much-needed long distance threat off the bench, connecting on seven of 15 (.466) shots from long distance.

    HOME SWEET HOME
    With today’s win, the Scarlet Knights move to 3-0 on the season at the Louis Brown Athletic Center. Rutgers is winning by an average margin of 28 points on its home court and is holding opponents to just 46.3 points per game. Overall, Rutgers has won 18 of its last 20 games at the RAC.
