  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The No. 17/18 Rutgers women’s basketball team (1-0) jumped out to an early 11 point lead (13-2) and never looked back on its way to a 90-42 victory against Rider (0-1) in the season opener on Saturday, Nov. 20, at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

The Scarlet Knights were a dominant force in the paint outscoring the Broncs 64-10, due in large part to the play of junior forward Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ), who recorded her third career double-double with a career high 33 points on 14-of-18 (.778) shooting and 10 rebounds.

Freshmen forward Tudy Reed (Chicago, IL) and guard Matee Ajavon (Newark, NJ) were inserted into the starting lineup and the impact was immediate, as Reed and Ajavon combined for 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor, eight rebounds and four assists in the first half. Reed ended the game with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Ajavon registered 10 points, five rebounds and eight assists. Freshman guard Essence Carson (Paterson, NJ) chipped in 10 points and six rebounds, marking the first time in Rutgers recorded history that three freshmen reached double figures in scoring in the season opener.

Leading 37-29 with 2:14 to play in the first half, Rutgers put together a 53-11 run to lead 90-40 with 1:35 remaining in the game.

Rutgers shot 52 percent (39-75) from the field, while holding Rider to 27 percent (13-49), including a 3-21 effort in the second half.

Rutgers will travel to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands to participate in the 2004 Paradise Jam. The Scarlet Knights will face South Dakota State on Thursday, Nov. 25, at 4:30 p.m.; Oregon State on Friday, Nov. 26, at 2:00 p.m. and Kentucky on Saturday, Nov. 27, at 4:30 p.m.
