Horton scored a game-high 23 points on 9-for-14 (.643) shooting, making three of her five (.600) attempts from three-point range, while adding six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Freshman Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) scored nine of her 12 points in the first half, and sophomore Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) added 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and a team-best four steals.
The Scarlet Knights led 26-21 at halftime, but the two teams traded the lead three times in the second half. The Golden Bears cut the RU lead to two (47-45) with 5:31 on the clock, but the Scarlet Knights responded with seven unanswered points, a spurt that was capped by a Newton bucket to make the score 54-45 with 2:15 to play. Cal then scored two consecutive baskets, but Horton’s pair of free throws with six seconds remaining in the game gave Rutgers its final seven-point margin.
Rutgers forced 18 Cal turnovers while putting together another efficient effort from three-point range (4-7, .571). On Nov. 22 at No. 5/6 Stanford, RU shot 55.6 (5-9) percent from beyond the arc.
The Scarlet Knights will return to the East Coast to host the Rutgers Coca-Cola Classic next weekend. Northwestern will play Richmond in the first round Saturday, Nov. 30, at 12:00 p.m., followed by Rutgers against Wagner. The consolation game will be contested Sunday, Dec. 1, at 12:00 p.m., followed by the championship game.
