The Scarlet Knights scored the game’s first five points, but Stanford regained its composure and quickly built a 16-7 lead. Rutgers scratched back to within two points (22-20) with less than seven minutes remaining in the first half, but the Cardinal scored 11 of the final 14 points of the half to take a 10-point lead (33-23), their largest of the game, into the locker room.
RU came out of halftime on fire, putting together a 22-3 run of its own to pull ahead 45-36 at the 11:45 mark. Stanford chipped away at that lead over the next seven minutes, regaining the advantage on a pair of Azella Perryman free throws (54-52) with 4:55 remaining in the game.
The Cardinal never relinquished that lead, seemingly coming up with an answer for every Rutgers challenge. RU cut the lead to one (57-56) on a Rebecca Richman (Bronx, NY) bucket, but the Knights then missed two shots and committed a pair of fouls. Stanford completed a three-point play and made two other free throws to take a 62-56 lead during that stretch, but senior Mauri Horton (Minneapolis, MN) responded with a steal and sophomore Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) scored, which was followed by a Cardinal turnover and a Pondexter layup to make the score 62-60 in Stanford’s favor with 33 seconds on the clock.
RU then went for the steal on a double-team, but Pondexter was called for her first foul of the game. Stanford’s Kelley Suminski made two free throws with 18 seconds on the clock to seal the win for the Cardinal.
Pondexter scored 14 points on 6-of-18 (.333) shooting in her RU debut, the most points for a Scarlet Knight in their first collegiate game since Tasha Pointer scored 16 in her first game on Nov. 17, 1997, against Maryland. Pondexter added five rebounds and four assists. Classmate Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) tied for the team scoring lead with 14 points, making six of 10 (.600) field goals, and collected six rebounds. Horton added 11 points, while Richman tallied six points and a team-best seven rebounds and two blocked shots in 15 minutes off the bench.
There were many positives for the Knights, including a 34-26 rebounding advantage and tallying just 11 turnovers. RU shot 55.6 (5-9) percent from three-point range, but made just five off 11 (.455) free throws. Stanford made the most of its opportunities at the charity stripe, converting 16 of its 20 (.800) attempts.
Rutgers will finish its West Coast road trip on Sunday, Nov. 24, when the Scarlet Knights face California (0-0) at 2:00 p.m. PT.
