  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s basketball team opened the 2002-03 season tonight with a 72-62 exhibition loss to the Houston Jaguars AAU team, at the Louis Brown Athletic Center. The Jaguars are a team composed of former college basketball players and members of the WNBA.

Sophomore point guard Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL), playing in her first game as a Scarlet Knight, led the team with 24 points on 8-of-18 shooting, while sophomore guard Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) added 15 points and four steals.

The Jaguars led for most of the first half, with the Scarlet Knights taking the lead twice, including with 0:09 left on a jumper by Newton. The Jaguars then got a three-point field goal from Angela Zampella with 0:01 left in the half to take a 30-29 advantage at intermission. Pondexter led Rutgers in the half, scoring 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while Newton tallied seven points and three steals.

The Jaguars extended their lead in the second half, leading by as many as 16 points with 2:46 left in the contest. Houston was aided by 16-24 (.667) field goal shooting in the second half, while Rutgers made 9-of-25 (.360) shots from the floor. For the game, the Jaguars made
    28-of-53 (.528) field goal attempts.

Pondexter continued to impress during the second half by scoring 17 points, including converting 7-of-8 attempts from the free throw line. Senior Mauri Horton (Minneapolis, MN) had six points in the second half and finished with nine, while Rebecca Richman (Brooklyn, NY) led RU with six rebounds in 12 minutes of action.

The Scarlet Knights will return to action next Wednesday, Nov. 13, in an exhibition contest against another AAU team, the New York Gazelles. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

    Post-Game Notes

    The Wait Is Over:
Tonight sophomore Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) made her much-anticipated debut as a Scarlet Knight. The 5-9 point guard was a part of the starting lineup and scored Rutgers’ first points of the night. Pondexter finished the evening with 24 points, three assists, three rebounds and one steal.

    Welcome to the Big Time:
Tonight’s game also marked the debut of two of Rutgers four newcomers. The 2001-2002 recruiting class was ranked 13th by the All Star Girls Report. Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) was the first freshman to take the floor, replacing Mariotta Theodoris (Riviera Beach, FL) at the 14:24 mark in the first half. Courtney Locke (San Marcos, TX) made her debut in the first half, giving Pondexter a reprieve at 7:38 in the first half. Combined, the rookies contributed five rebounds, four points and one steal.

    Newton’s Own:
Chelsea Newton’s (Monroe, LA) 15 points this evening are the most the sophomore guard has scored since her career-high 23 points against Providence on Dec. 5, 2001. Also, Newton nabbed four steals, tying her career best from Dec. 12, 2001, against George Washington.
