PISCATAWAY, NJ - Rutgers junior Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) has been named a member of the Kodak/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Region 1 Team for the second straight year, becoming a finalist for the group’s All-America Team.
Pondexter, a 5-9 guard, is averaging 18.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game for the Scarlet Knights this season, and has already been named a finalist for three national player-of-the-year awards (Wooden Women’s Award, State Farm Wade Trophy and Naismith) as well as this year’s Nancy Lieberman Award (top point guard). An honorable mention All-America selection by the Associated Press and Kodak/WBCA last season, she is a two-time first-team all-BIG EAST selection and earned a spot on the BIG EAST Championship All-Tournament Team for the second consecutive year. Pondexter twice has been named the BIG EAST Conference Co-Player of the Week this winter, and she earned a spot on the Preseason WNIT All-Tournament Team.
Pondexter is the fourth Scarlet Knight to twice earn all-region honors from Kodak, following in the footsteps of Sue Wicks (1986-88), Caroline DeRoose (1993-94) and Tasha Pointer (2000-2001).
The Kodak/WBCA All-America Teams will be announced at the Final Four April 4-6 in New Orleans.
The Scarlet Knights (21-10, 10-6 BIG EAST) advanced to their fourth BIG EAST Tournament championship game, losing to No. 5 Boston College 75-57 March 9. Rutgers awaits the announcement of the 64-team field for the 2004 NCAA Tournament, which will be released March 14.
