  • HARTFORD, CT - Competing in its fourth game in as many days and playing with just seven scholarship players, the seventh-seeded Rutgers women’s basketball team (21-11, 10-6 BIG EAST) fell short in its bid for its first BIG EAST title, losing to No. 5 Boston College (25-6, 11-5 BIG EAST) 75-57 in the BIG EAST Championship final March 9 at the Hartford Civic Center.

Rutgers kept the game close in the opening minutes, but Boston College turned an 8-8 tie into a 17-10 (13:33) advantage, and took a 41-24 lead into the locker room. The Eagles quickly built a 24-point advantage (53-29, 14:05), but the Scarlet Knights put together a 19-6 run, capped by a Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) jumper at the 6:01 mark to make the score 59-48. That was as close at Rutgers could get, as RU’s weary legs could not keep up with the hot-shooting Eagles. Boston College responded to the Rutgers run with a 15-0 spurt of its own, putting the game out of reach.

Boston College, coming off an upset of No. 1 Connecticut the previous day that found the Eagles shoot better than 60.0 percent, was red-hot again from the floor, making 68.0 (17-25) percent of its shots during the first half and 57.8 (26-45) percent of its attempts overall.

Pondexter scored a game-best 27 points, adding two assists and three steals. Sophomore Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) added 14 points for the Knights.

Rutgers was playing in its third BIG EAST Tournament championship game, and first since 2000. RU was just the second No. 7 seed to advance to the final (1993, No. 7 Providence).

Rutgers used just seven scholarship players against the Eagles due to the injuries to Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) and Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA). In order to augment the depleted roster, RU dressed two of its managers – junior Erin Boccher (Plainfield, NJ) and sophomore Devon Groomes (Trenton, NJ). Boccher entered the game with 29.5 seconds to play, while Groomes came in with 0.9 second on the clock.

Pondexter and McCullouch were joined on the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team by West Virginia’s Yolanda Paige and Boston College’s Kathrin Ress and Amber Jacobs. The Eagles’ Jessalyn Deveny was named the MVP.

Rutgers now awaits the announcement of the 64-team field for the NCAA Tournament. That announcement will be made this Sunday, March 14.
